Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

I saw three mountain lions very clearly and believe I saw a fourth, perhaps the mother, running into the bush ahead of them. About 4' body length, 2 1/2'high, 2 1/2' big fat brown tail. Really healthy looking, all three. Awesome sight.

The date of this sighting is approximately a month after finding the deer kill by Kennedy Grove, so the date is an approximation. I suspect it's the same cat, and probably the same as I saw on 12/10/2014. I was somewhere off the Sobrante Ridge Trail on some side trail when I spotted something in a clearing on the opposite hill (on the other side of Castro Ranch Road). It took me a minute to realize it wasn't a deer; they often graze in the ranch field just downhill from where I saw this cat.

While out walking on the trail east of CSUEB campus, I spotted what looked like a deer at first: a large, tawny-colored animal on the grassy hill. I noticed it was low to the ground and had the movements of a cat. Then I saw its tail and recognized that it was a mountain lion. It was walking West and didn't appear to see me.

We were walking West on the Miwok Trail with our dog and spotted the Mountain Lion crossing the fire trail. He was headed south towards the stream that runs to the lagoon. We only saw him for an instant as the lion was quick to get out of our sight. We have seen countless bobcats in the Headlands but this was our first sighting of a mountain lion. Also, friends of ours that are Coast Guards stationed at Ft. Baker spotted a Mountain Lion 1 month earlier about 1/4 mile east of where we saw the lion. They saw the lion at the bridge across from the Presidio Riding Club. The bridge connects Rodeo Valley Trail and Bunker Road.

Spotting a number of low-flying vultures, I found a fresh deer kill. It had its neck snapped all the way under its body and the viscera had been eaten. It appeared to have been attacked originally about 10 yards up the hill near some trees. I went back a week later and all that was left was a bit of the spine. About a week after that I saw more vulture activity in the same area, but they were in dense poison oak closer to the creek. I haven't been back since.

In Upper Wilder Ranch, we saw a large mountain lion about 50-100 yds up the trail. We hollered at it, and it growled back, sniffed the ground, and settled in the grass to watch us. We left the area. First sighting in 25 years of hiking in Wilder.
