Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.
Have you seen a puma or bobcat in your neighborhood?

I was on my bike, after dark, with lights on the handlebars (one steady, one flashing). Something "exploded" from behind a cluster of bushes as I passed, running in my same direction of travel, angled to intercept me - right at me. I got a brief view of a dark shape, roughly 2- 2 1/2 ft high and 3-4 ft long (perhaps a bit higher/longer?) running almost completely silently, just a bit of faint "rustle", towards me. It got to within six feet or so of me, when I accelerated quickly, and outpaced it (. . .possibly. Either way, it stopped). When I looked back a moment later, I could see nothing (although it was quite dark). It was a very short, and very fast, event.

8:08PM. Old Railroad Grade Fire Road - about 37°55'21.4"N 122°33'52.8"W. Mountain Lion sitting in the middle of the trail. A first I thought it was a huge bobcat (which I've seen many of, even in my backyard). Stare down. Grabbed my pack in a way to use defensively if need be and go my phone to take picture. Too dark and shakey to take a good photo as it finally moved off. You can't really even see it was a mountain lion.

Reported to me: "06/09/15- approx 8:30 (still light- dusk). I couldn't tell gender, but I would describe it as a large/slender cat. It seemed to be walking in the stereotypical low/crouching walk and seemed very alert/ not injured. It was walking north on the same route the deer/turkey take everyday"

At 12pm I saw what I believed to be a mountain lion in the brush near Sausal Pond not far from the Windy Hill parking lot but could not confirm. I continued hiking and at 1:30pm near Razorback Ridge and Lost Trails I came upon another hiker who had just seen a mountain lion sitting in the middle of the trail. The lion stared at him showing its teeth for about 30 seconds before fleeing. Large adult male, at least 120 pounds. The other hiker and I reported these sightings to the park rangers and spoke to them at the bottom.

I am reporting for a neighbor who witnessed but does not want to be identified. I have just started collecting lion sighting data for area as a personal interest. Based on discussions with witness, I am sure this was a lion and not a bobcat. Lion was healthy and running.

Night sighting while hiking alone after summiting DIablo, brief spookey eyes glimpse with my headlamp looking up from the trail to investigate what really did sound like a really loud kitten/baby scream. Then it changed octaves to the full roar that wont be forgotten ever, apparently adult mountain lions can sound like baby's (a lure?) then switch to a roar at will.

"As soon as my headlights shone on it, I yelled out, 'That's a mountain lion,'" Iveland said. "Yeah, it was pretty crazy seeing it."
"That's when I realized that, 'Wow. That mountain lion is cruising up into some backyards.' That's when I got on the line to Animal Control," Iveland said. "Up close and personal in my truck is one thing but walking along the bike trail or mountain biking and seeing one would be totally different," Iveland said.
