Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

I was on the Windy Hill, hiking trail, by myself. The puma was about 10 feet in front of me, and walking in the same direction as I was. I stopped, and it stopped as well. I kept walking forward and it stopped and turned toward me, looked at me, and then went off into the forest. Absolutely beautiful. I took several photos

From a 2nd floor balcony I heard some rustling in the field behind me, then all of a sudden there was the sound of an animal being attacked and then a chase ensued, with a pause, another skirmish, and then a 100' long chase to a 5' gate.
I believe I saw 2 cats chasing something to the gate, but they could not fit under it.
By the time I was able to get a clear view through the trees, the cats were moving along the fence line on the field-side along Thompson road. They were not big, seemed young. I saw one with a long dark tail. And am pretty sure the other did too.

In the distance no more than 50 or so meters I spotted a distinctly catlike creature slightly larger than a housecat sitting in the grass. It was dark and I couldn't get a close look but it appeared to have a grayish coat and a fluffy mane as a bobcat would. It disappeared into the bushes shortly after it saw me. I am almost certain what I have spotted was indeed a young bobcat. In the surrounding area I found tufts of what I assumed to be rabbit fur as there is an abundance of rabbit in the area but no rabbit carcass. The sighting was at a little after 8 pm. I urge the public not to disturb this rare and special animal.

Around 6:30 in the evening, walking up into the open area of El Cerrito Hillside that is at Navellier and Portola, we call it the "PG&E field" because it's mostly a rolling grassy open meadow area with a few tall bushes and shrubs and otherwise dotted with PG&E power towers. This area is adjacent to the the more woody hillside trails on the left side and otherwise bordered by neighborhoods including busy Moser Lane running parallel on the far right side. We often see lone coyotes and wild turkeys in this area usually in the mornings. This evening me and my two dogs (on leash body harnesses) came over the hill and kept hearing a weird bird noise. Couldn't figure out what or why- but got past some tall bushes and there was a lone female turkey making the noise- but then we saw why- mountain lion! The mountain lion was sitting upright grooming itself, even though the turkey was just a few feet away and pacing back and forth making the noise, maybe to try and distract the lion from a nest? But maybe the lion had fed and that's why it was grooming and not interested in the turkey?
We started to leave and the lion spotted us. We walked away slowly and kept watch of it as it kept watch of us. It stared at us until we got back past the bushes. So surprised by how big the eyes are and how long the tail is!!! The tail also had a very dark tip but the rest of the animal coloring was tan. Thought it was kind of strange the lion would be in this area right now -- because the normally long meadow grass has all been recently mowed down and at 6:30 still very bright out. However, the nearby woody hillside often has deer and we have heard of mountain lions being in the area before- just never seen one, until now!!! Wish I could have got a photo- but didn't take my phone or a camera for this hike!

Bobcat was spotted wandering through our yard around 2 am. Our automatic lights turned on as it wandered around and it was observed moving from our backyard toward our front yard. We tried to get a good picture but it's just a blurry blob (it was 2 am after all). It had the bobbed tail and trademark eyespots on the back of its ears. Hard to tell the age or gender but it was not particularly large.

This was a very large bobcat. Spotted at 12pm. I saw it from approximately 30-40 feet away and would estimate its height at the back at roughly 24”s. Biggest one I’ve ever seen.
