Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

Around 10am, 4/18 while on hike, spotted a live mountain lion on the other side of the pond on east Sutton trail. It wasn’t trying to hide, she looked right at us. We think we may have come upon her getting a drink of water. Much too big to be a bobcat, and definitively spotted her face and a long tail. Movement was also very “slinky.” And we got a good look right at her face dead on. What a wild encounter. We swiftly made our way back to the parking lot!

Small bobcat ambling down Green Point Lane at 7 PM. I tried to get a photo, but by the time I got up to the street from inside my house, the animal was too far away. I got a good view from my window. Bobbed tail, spotted under chin, stripes at tops of legs. Cinnamon/tawny color. Not large. Maybe 20-25 lbs? Much more rangey than a domestic cat (legs much longer than a housecat). Not plump, but ribs were not prominent. Seemed to be in no rush, but headed in a specific direction.

We saw a male bobcat resting in our backyard grass around 6:30 in the morning and took a couple pictures from our deck. When it saw us, it moseyed through the garden, then lay down in some bark. Seemed to be watching a squirrel off at some distance on the fence -- but it did not seem that interested in hunting it. The bobcat watched me taking pictures of him, then he ambled up the length of the yard, went over the 4-foot-high fence, crossed the street and walked up the sidewalk. It looked young and very healthy. Also very nonchalant.

Night hiking in a pair with headlamp and flashlights, turned around and saw two front-facing eyes reflecting from under the trees about 100ft away, at the height and size of a puma’s face. Animal did not move except blink or turn head for up to 15 minutes while we made ourselves loud and continued to flash lights towards it, until we were able to slowly leave.

Heard rustling outside home office window, and saw him on the fence looking over into the neighbor's yard and open meadow below. As I scrambled to get my phone, making noise with the blinds, he jump to higher portion of the fence and looked over at me. He seemed to be as curious about me as I was about him. I was able to get a couple of nice photos.

Nocturnal Gate Crossing (April 15, 2026)
A large adult bobcat was recorded by a security camera at night. The animal navigated the wire property gate, moving along the perimeter fence line with a steady, low-profile gait. Infrared video captures a muscular feline frame, long legs, and a prominent bobbed tail. The animal appeared healthy, highly alert, and mature as it traveled through the gate opening.

I noticed the bobcat on the Tassajara Creek paved trail. It also noticed me but did not run. I followed it up the trail for a while. It eventually stopped on the trail in front of me. I kept my distance (15 feet) and watched for a few minutes as it focussed on a squirrel. It was not skittish about me at all. It eventually very casually walked off the side of the trail into the bushes where the squirrel went. I unfortunately did not have my phone with me to take a picture.

I was driving into work when I noticed an animal on the left side of the road.about to cross. It was about the same color as a deer so I thought it was a small deer at first. As it crossed the road ahead of me I noticed it had a tail with a black tip. Inthought that's a strange looking dog. As I watched it I realized it had a cat head. I could not believe what I had just seen. I reached the part of the road where it crossed at and it had already gone over the levee on the brightside of the road so it was no longer visible.

Yesterday I was mountain biking in the Mt. Diablo open space. I entered via Macedo Ranch to Fairy Lantern Trail to Stage Road. On Stage Rd between the green gate and the area with the streams there was a carcass of a large deer on the trail. The meat was done but the innards where in the middle of the trail still in tact. I assume it was a fresh kill from the night before as the carrion birds had not come for the remainders.
I did not see a Puma but I spend a lot of time in the park and I do not believe the Bobcats or Coyotes could be capable of taking down a deer. My assumption is it must have been a large cat.
I was tempted to take a photo but did not in case the animal was still nearby.
