Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

We were playing on a playset at 9:00 pm. We saw an animals going from the field to the railroad tracks. We thought it was a dog or cat. But it was no dog or cat. Maybe a deer, coyote, bobcat, or fox. But it was none of that. We realize it was a cougar. It was going to be as fast as 40 mph per hour. We were on the playset to seek shelter. Suddenly we didn't see it so I thought it was at my house. Seconds later I saw the cougar go out of the reeds to the railroad track. I said lets get the heck out of there now. All of us ran to our house and that was it

I've noticed a deer carcass (small, possibly a fawn) on the Upper Lake Road trail in Belmont's Open Space preserve. Probably in a pretty progressed state of decomposition by now. Would have reported sooner, had I known about this website!

Seen by park ranger: Two full-grown (or 95% grown) lions lounging against the picnic tables at the edge of the lawn in Palo Alto's Foothills Park. Small group of deer about 50 yds away to NW on lawn near road; alert but not fussed. Pair of lions seen again about 2 hours later near Vista Hill by reliable park visitors.

On 9/22/14 at approx 0550pst, while jogging the 680 trail near Loma Alta, I saw/heard a pack of coyotes chasing deer. During the chase, they flushed out what appeared to be a female mountain lion with two cubs approximately 3mo in age. The cubs were roughly the size of bobcats/approx 40lbs. I am very familiar with wildlife and am 100% certain of the sighting. The mountain lions moved quickly up and over the ridgeline from SE to NW toward Smith Ridge Fire Rd.

There was a smell of decay in this area on Friday, 9/12. It was much stronger on Monday, 9/15, so I investigated its source. I found a deer carcass with apparent puncture wounds on the back of its neck. Its ribcage and abdomen had been torn open, and there was a large quantity of fur tufts off to the side. The only thing that didn't seem characteristic of a lion kill was the fact that it was relatively out in the open and uncovered. I can't be certain of what killed the deer, but it seemed likely enough to be worth reporting.

Wendy Way, Mill Valley. Cougar was walking up our road and I was in my car. When it saw the car it went into the bushes and stood still. If I had not seen it moving I should not have seen it. It was well camouflaged. It was moving to the west uphill. It had a long tail, was darker than I expected. It was about the size of labrador dog, but lovely soft fur and rounded ears. I saw no stripes. It was not a bob cat.
