Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

We were walking West on the Miwok Trail with our dog and spotted the Mountain Lion crossing the fire trail. He was headed south towards the stream that runs to the lagoon. We only saw him for an instant as the lion was quick to get out of our sight. We have seen countless bobcats in the Headlands but this was our first sighting of a mountain lion. Also, friends of ours that are Coast Guards stationed at Ft. Baker spotted a Mountain Lion 1 month earlier about 1/4 mile east of where we saw the lion. They saw the lion at the bridge across from the Presidio Riding Club. The bridge connects Rodeo Valley Trail and Bunker Road.

Spotting a number of low-flying vultures, I found a fresh deer kill. It had its neck snapped all the way under its body and the viscera had been eaten. It appeared to have been attacked originally about 10 yards up the hill near some trees. I went back a week later and all that was left was a bit of the spine. About a week after that I saw more vulture activity in the same area, but they were in dense poison oak closer to the creek. I haven't been back since.

In Upper Wilder Ranch, we saw a large mountain lion about 50-100 yds up the trail. We hollered at it, and it growled back, sniffed the ground, and settled in the grass to watch us. We left the area. First sighting in 25 years of hiking in Wilder.

Feb. 23, 2014. Cat was 150 yds away in front of me while jogging. Ran across S.P. Ridge Trail in Wildcat Canyon, on trail north of cattle corral. Cat ran into open, paused, then ran south across field and up into wooded rock outcropping.

on 2/7/2014 in AM on Scout Rd, Oakland at hairpin turn from Mountain Blvd. EBMUD (water dist.) employee described to me (they were working on the street) when driving at the noted point a mountain lion jumped from a tree and ran up a hill towards the adjacent park land. I was heading south on the Nimitz Way trail in Tilden park at almost exactly 5pm when I came around a bend and saw the outline of a mountain lion on the top of the hill. I would have doubted what I saw if it were not for the long tail in the air - much too big for a coyote or bobcat. It checked me out for a minute and then disappeared over the ridge.

Motion light went on outside. I looked out window and a medium sized mountain lion was there, sniffing around. It went around back to the deck, sniffed around some more then left - I think. Bonny Doon location.

This is the third time this lion has tripped my field cam. These three photos are the best due to the good lighting conditions. I would appreciate any approximate aging of the lion or any questions you may have. To protect the lion and my equipment the location of the pin mark is within 1/4 mi of the site. I'm not sure the photos are attached correctly. If not give me an e-mail address I can send them.

On 12/17 at 3am I saw an uncollared lion at very close range in my backyard (less than 20ft, I could smell it - I went back inside and watched for 45 minutes with a nightscope - WOW)
Also - you need a 2014 on your date pulldown.

About 1/4 mile west of the Hemme staging area, immediately west of the first metal gate, on the ringtail cat trail. To our right was a deer kill down in the dry creek bed. Taking a closer look it was very fresh, i.e. same day. Another 15 feet down the trail we could see where the Puma had dragged it down an embankment across the trail and into the creek. On the trail was fresh blood. Once again the deer, this time a buck, was lying on its back, legs spread, and meat eaten off the ribs with the entrails gone. We will have pictures soon.

We (two adults) heard the mountain lion jump away (about 30 ft initially) and saw it clearly go along the upper side (east) of the trail, cross the trail, and disappear towards the forested area. It seemed to be fully grown, and its gate sounded heavy. Uphill (north-east) was a large group of deer, out in the open. The time was about 5:15pm, right after sunset.

This pinpoint is approximate. Walking west on the madrone trail, about 2 miles west of the ringtail cat trail, our dog discovered just to the left and up a short embankment, a very fresh kill that was a doe. Her neck and head were still intact. Her ribs were bare and her internal organs were gone. She still had fur on her back. The remains were partially covered with dried branches. We have some pictures that we will send soon.

We saw a Puma, at first looking like a log, until it got up and walked off to the right toward the canyon. We were about 150 ft. west of the Puma on the Los Trampas Ridge Trail, heading north just past the cattle gate on the ridge. We just missed getting a picture, but we could see its long tail curving up with a ball at the end of it. It then dissapeared into the brush and trees of the canyon.
