Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

CDFW Wildlife Officers tranquilized and safely captured a young female mountain lion Saturday night after a report of the cat in the backyard in Santa Cruz. The animal was located with help from Santa Clara and Santa Cruz wardens on Escalona Court just north of Highway 1. A deer carcass that the lion had been eating was found nearby. CDFW official say the lion may have been attracted to the urban area by the large numbers of deer in the neighborhood and there is evidence that the deer are being fed by local residents. The healthy lion was successfully returned to suitable habitat. CDFW reminds residents that feeding wildlife is illegal and dangerous as it can bring predators into urban areas. I was on a trail that parallels Adobe Creek toward the baylands in southern Palo Alto when I saw the lion cross my path out of the creek bed toward the thick brush on the dry side of the marsh. There were lots of birds there. I was too close and nervous to get a photo. I walked by and saw it walking away toward the marsh. I wondered whether it was a large bobcat but I confirmed the big U shaped tail.

I saw the Puma standing on the side of the road at the corner of Mill Rd and Glen Canyon Rd at 5:48 am. I stop and the Puma crossed very slowly in front of (aprox 10') of my vehicle in a north to south direction. The Puma then stopped and stared at me for aprox 4 minutes, then again slowly crossed the road in a south to north Direction, then disappeared into the brush. I am absolutely certain this was a Puma. I estimate the shoulder height to be aproximately 30"

I was driving along Gilroy Hot Springs Road near the Hunting Hollow trailhead after a hike and saw the puma in the headlights at 7:05 pm. It was probably a female and ran along the road for about ten seconds trotting slowly. I got a good look. It had a long tale with the black tip. It wasn't a dog or bobcat or coyote. She was brown in color. I slowed down as i got closer to it and was 40 feet from it at one point. It also turned back and looked at my car before going back into the underbrush.

At garin regional park on main trail right before the 'Meyers Ranch' sign under the tree - saw mountain lion on the hill west of the road in an area we have often seen deer. Trail and park were empty during chilly rainy season. Animal was leaping and was not a coyote or bobcat. long tail and sleek figure made it seem like a lion. It then stopped and looked at us and we could verify that it was a lion.

The Puma jumped across the concrete lane divider on Highway 92, just west of Skyline Blvd. I would estimate his weight at 150-200 lbs. He sailed at least 2 feet over the divide

Horse owner reported that 750 pound colt was kill by mountain lion in a pasture under an oak tree in heavy rain period. Wounds on neck and head and back plus tracks (two sets; one large, one small) support assumption. Carcass revisited next day by predator or other animals. Experienced personnel from Sheriff Department investigated and support horse owner's assumptions. Horse buried.

I saw This puma from my bedroom window on top of my neighbors roof. It walked over the top then it was gone. It looked small for a lion but it definitely had all the right features. This happened Jan. 17, 2017.
