Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

I don't know if the "Pleasanton Ridge " is the real name of the open space park that I live near an take my dog for hikes at but this is where the cat was. This park is just past the main entrance of Castlewood country club on I believe foothill in Pleasanton. I
am very familiar with mountain lions as I also own a gold mining claim on the middle fork of the Yuba river and I have had a few encounters up there as well over the last several years so I definitely know that this was a mountain lion. My friend, my dog and I were almost done with the hike and we were heading back down towards the car. There is a Grove of olives and we actually walked right past the cat without even noticing him/her. It was not until we got down from the trail that walks next to the olive trees and a man and woman were there any had been looking up towards the olive trees. They said that we had just walked past a mountain lion. Sure enough there he/she was sitting under a olive trees 2 rows in from the last tree. I think it was a male because it was a very large cat. It looked healthy and mature. We just stood there watching him and he sat there watching us.

Saw two young lions crossing highway 84 heading up the hill from Thornewood preserve. I estimate them to be about 70lbs each. My first sighting, but they looked long and lean.

Deer Camp trail, northwest Novato. In Indian Tree Open Space Preserve. Near the "R" Ranch, the Ryan Ranch, adjacent to the Grassi Ranch. Horses were on a trail ride om Deer Camp fireroad coming down off Deer Camp trail (narrow footpaths). Horses became upset and were on high alert jumping and visibly upset. Our horses are seasoned trail horses and we ride there everyday so this was very unusual. There was a fresh kill (deer) in the creek-bed and after a few days in hot July Novato heat it really stunk. The lion came back every day or few days to eat her fill. We could hear the lion growling at us. The other groups witnessed growling as well. We stopped riding there for a while until it left. We were different groups of riders. I witnessed it twice and another woman who rides my horse had him rear and spin around and he refused to go forward on trail. He has never done this in his life. Our preserve goes over redwood forests and live oak forests to Nicasio on private ranch land and then to the Seashore in wilderness land. This is the 100 mile territory that they need. After a few days, about 5 days total. After a few days of my absense I rode there in the AM and it still stunk to high heaven, then went to have lunch at Creekside Bakery and came back at around 2:00 PM and the carcass was gone. I'm assuming a coyote could move the carcass. Our horses think of coyotes as house cats as are not fearful of them. A mountain lion is completely foreign to them and they would have the prey response to run for their life.

I was riding my bike from Stinson Beach up the Panoramic Highway about a mile+ above Highway 1, and not far from the Dipsea Trail, when I saw what looked to be a mountain lion standing on the right shoulder of the road. He dropped into the brush when I got to within about 75 yards. Has anyone else reported this? A passing car slowed as it got near to him, so they saw it too.

Indian Tree Preserve, Novato, Calif. Marin County Open Space Preserve. My trail horse and I came across a mountian lion at a creek. My horse was on high alert, her rfused to go forward. The animal was growling at us. I did not see it. We were alone. 3-4 other small groups of riders had the same experience that week. All the horses were on high alert. These are seasoned trail horses with experienced riders. This has never happened to me and my horse before. It was definitely not a coyote. It was either a lion or a bear.

We had it come in our back yard and attack one of our pet cats. We ran outside when we heard the mountain lion growl & a bang we rushed outside and we chased it out of our yard and it jumped our fence and ran off. Our cat's collar was ripped off but she was fine.
