Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

I was hiking up the Laurelwood Park Trail with my dog and we were almost at the summit of the trail when I saw the back end of what I believe was a mountain lion retreating off of the trail ahead of me and into the brush. While I did not see the entire cat, I saw its back half and it had the distinctive thick, long mountain lion tail with a darkened tip. I immediately turned around and made my way down while trying to keep an eye behind me. I did not see it again. I will not be so foolish as to hike that late up there again!

On June 22, 2019, I was In my backyard, walking toward the 8 foot chain-link fence between my backyard and my neighbor's, when I glimpsed a moderately large, long, lean animal with a thick, long tail almost to the ground and the tip of the tail curved up. It had short, golden brown fur and was about 10"“12 feet from me.
It was a thrilling experience even just to glimpse such a beautiful wild creature in such close proximity to me!

Saw a Puma concolor (mountain lion) at the bottom of Whiskey Ridge. Near Moore Creek side of Lake Hennessy.Estimate it to be about the size of a retriever , maybe 50 to 60 pounds (guessing). It quickly disappeared into the Thanks woods. Path workers report seeing fresh tracks near their work.

Carcass with clean eating pattern, expect it was a mountain lion. Heard strange noise last night at dusk around 9pm, along with a dog who wouldn't go outside. Vultures this morning led to carcass.

At about 11:15 p.m., my Aussie Shepard mix dog asked to go outside and I stepped out with him. My dog stopped about ten feet from the door, refusing to go further into the yard. I looked in the direction he was staring/sniffing and saw a cougar about 20 feet away. When I stared, it sank a little in a very cat-like way, as if to say, "I'm not here," then froze, looking at us calmly. My dog turned and ran for the house. I walked slowly backward until near the house;. Got my camera and went back out but it was gone in only a moment. I have seen cougars in the wild before in another state, and this was definitely a cougar. We live on Jana Vista Rd in El Sobrante, right next to a wilderness area and regularly have foxes, skunks, possums, wild turkeys and coyotes at times in our front and back yards, The cougar was likely hunting them. There is a steep slope downward in the northern third of the back yard, too steep to use much, and it has multiple trees a bush, and ivy ground cover, places for small creatures to hide. It was beautiful, and a privilege to see it. Glad to answer any questions from researchers.

Large cat hanging on the left side of the trail. Tip of tail was slightly darker. Hard to believe it would be at such a populated trail. Tweeted at Palo Alto police to see if anyone else saw it - guess not.

We picked up what looks like mountain lion scat in a planter bed alongside our house this afternoon.
There are also large deep indentations in the bed where I recently removed a plant and amended soil so it’s light and fluffy - will look more closely in daylight at those; may be paw prints.
Scat was in the bed and alongside it ~ we have the scat
I have seen scat on trails around the bay and checked it with photos and descriptions.
