Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

Brief sighting crossing the road. Thought it was a deer at first due to size and color, but long tail and cat-like behavior suggest otherwise.

Live mountain lion seen on 7/23/19 approx 7:45PM on the Mayfair Ranch Trail in the Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve. It was approximately 2 miles up the trail from the parking lot (doing the loop clockwise) near the picnic table. We were resting at the picnic table and looked up and the lion was about 50 ft away standing on the trail looking at us. It was not aggressive and was just watching us. Since it was not aggressive, we took a couple of photos and then stood up on the table to scare it off. It initially ran downhill from the side of the trail but about a minute later we saw it cross the trail again and head to the uphill side of the trail. We turned around and walked back the way we came. There is a small creek that still had some water in it about 100 ft from the picnic table so it may have been walking up the trail to get some water when it encountered us. It was definitely a mountain lion and it did not have a tracking collar - see photos. --Brian Bailey and Jason Govig

I came around a slight curve on Mine Hill Rd. to see 3 mountain lions heading up the hill. Looks to be two older cubs and an adult. No collars visible. 2 of them began to stalk as I side-stepped with my dog. They focused on him but retreated when I rose my arms again and shouted.

I never thought to report my sighting online, and the date is most likely not accurate, but I spotted a large bobcat a few years ago at this location while I was walking my dog around 3:35AM. I know that it was a bobcat because of its distinct features. It had large paws, a sausage-like tail, tufted ears, a flat face, and when it ran East, it brought its legs together at the center like a "V" shape.

Saw a large mountain lion while ascending Black Mountain Trail on July 3. The cat was slowly moving through the shadows on the uphill side of the trail, near the last set of switchbacks that is fully under the cover of trees. It was easily less than 100 feet from me, moving away, uphill at a diagonal angle and showed no interest in me. I determined it was an ML, not a bobcat or large dog based on its size, which I could clearly see and the way it moved (quiet and catlike). I watched it for about 30 seconds before heading back down to Rhus Ridge parking lot, sharing this information with everyone I saw on the way down. No pics, video or more detailed location data.
