Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

Medium juvenile on the other side of the bend of , maybe 50 ft from me. Thought it was a large loose dog at first, until it swished it's tail and turned. At least the size of my 100lb German shepherd, turned and crouched. I starting yelling with a low tone and making big motions walking backwards and got my dog behind the bend before he could notice the cat. The cat was already moving slowly while crouching forward and I kept yelling while walking backward but because of the trail's turns I couldn't see is we were being followed. I didn't turn my back until I saw my car and ran for it with my dog.

A full size puma was in the process of quickly advancing directly at me from the walk/bike path at Jepson Lauren Tree Area. My infant was in my hands and 2 toddlers playing with my wife behind me. It came within 8-10 feet of me. I was able to growl aggressively and advance threateningly toward it, which made it retreat back to the bushy area on the other side of the path. It sat there as we warned other hikers/bikers who could see it, because it was trapped by the wired fence directly behind it. We left after about 20 minutes warning everyone nearby.

Saw a BLACK puma at Stanford Dish on the side of the trail. Saw back and long tail first - head was down when I passed it. I turned around and saw the head - I was on the phone with a friend describing what I saw. I told her: "it looks like a cat, but it is really big!" I got a good view of the puma when it crossed the trail towards the houses. The puma saw me, but wasn't interested, it disappeared quickly in the tall grasses. I was afraid but didn't feel threatened. I contacted the park guard, Stanford Police and Palo Alto Animal Control - spoke with Cody.
