Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

While I was walking my two dogs west on S Reina del Mar (RDM) about halfway between Juanita and Bonita Ave, I saw a LARGE cat come out of the Calera Creek area, cross S Reina Del Mar and head in the shrubs in front of the house at the southwest corner of S Reina Del Mar and Bonita Ave. As soon as I realized what I saw, I grabbed the dogs and headed back towards Juanita Avenue. This happened around 7 p.m. on a mid-December evening. My son has also twice seen a large cat crossing S RDM in this area. These sightings occurred while he was driving home (corner of S RDM and Juanita) along this same stretch of road in the early morning hours. In one sighting, my son saw the large cat leave our driveway on S RDM and scurry into the creek area as he was about to pull into the driveway.

Spotted Lynx sitting on trail about 50 yards away and had about 5 minute staring match. This was at the top of the Joan Targ trail in Portola Valley, right by the picnic bench at the top. (if you have hiked it you know) Lynx did not respond to noise or gestures. I slowly backed away facing it and made my way back down the trail.

I am regularly picking up bobcat activity thanks to my wildlife camera here in the Hurricane Gulch neighborhood of Sausalito. Have also seen a mountain lion tracing this same path. Happy to send videos - the photo I attached is a screen shot because the system won't let me send a video.

I saw what was probably the same cat twice within a couple of hours. From dark brown along its back to buff through most of its body and whitish legs. Probably about 30 pounds, based on being a bit bigger than my 25 lb. dogs. It had the characteristic stubby tail. The first sighting, I watched it cross the trail from about a hundred meters away. Over the course of ten minutes I continued along the trail while the cat worked its way down a gentle slope. I was as close as 50 meters. The second sighting was more exciting. The cat and I apparently startled each other. It had been hiding in tall grass quite close to the trail, it was getting late in the day. I was only 5 to 10 meters from it when it jumped up and ran away from me.
