Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

Our house faces the open trail. I heard an animal “screaming” and looked out the window onto the trail. The bobcat was 30 feet down the trail, with a squirrel in its mouth. It had spots on its coat, black tipped ears and a short black tipped tail. A coyote came down from the hill beside our house and chased the bobcat into the bushes. I’ve lived here 4 years and see coyotes almost daily. But never a bobcat. Especially in the middle of the afternoon (sighting approx 5pm).

After noticing fresh, large paw prints going in the same direction as I was I noticed them head left off the trail abruptly after following for about 1/4 mile. When I looked left I saw the large body and tail in the brush, but the light leaked through and hit the coat. I looked for maybe a second and continued on making myself loud and large in slight fear. Unmistakably too large to be a bobcat.

I heard loud squealing, which went on for many minutes, almost like a pig dying. Then pounding next to my door -- it was trying to get into my backyard. I looked out the window and a large animal with a short tail was balancing on my 6' tall fence. The whole fence shook. It left after I made lots of noise and turning on lights. Followed by dogs barking not long after

I did not personally witness this, but my client called me to tell me she had just had a close encounter with a mountain lion here, just after Noon today. It seemed to have been flushed out by the barking dogs of another hiker further down the hill, and ran into the chaparral. It then re-emerged, crossed the trail, and went back into the chaparral again.
