Puma & Bobcat Sightings Map
While many people are confident they've seen a puma, not all of these sightings are accurate. The map below includes both confirmed and unverified puma sightings in the larger San Francisco Bay region (and beyond) since 2004.
Over time, this will help us evaluate problem areas, movement barriers for wildlife, and potential for human-puma conflict.

A creature - too large to be a housecat - but maybe too small for a cougar moved slowly over the hill across from the Starbucks in Novato, Redwood Blvd. Moved like a cat - not a dog. Appeared to have a longer tail.
It moved slowly, stopping often.

Just as I was about to head up the trail yesterday, a fellow hiker told me on an encounter he recently had with a bobcat which was notable because the cat did not go away even though the hiker made noise and waved his hands. In fact, he said that the cat actually came at him in a crouch and continued to move toward him for about 100 feet as he backed away before finally leaving.
So, sure enough, I saw what do doubt was the same cat yesterday. He (?) was lying on the trail and immediately saw me as I came around the bend and I waved my hiking poles around to try to scare him away. The cat got up and took a few steps to climb the hill adjacent to the trail before changed changed his mind and went right back to the same spot and laid down again, watching me the whole time. So, I slowly backed up with my poles held up high until I got to the "switch" in the trail, at which time I continued to walk away, but no longer walked backwards. As I was walking back up the trail (away from the cat) the hiker who had just told me about his encounter was coming down the trail with his hiking partner and I alerted them to the fact that the cat was just around the bend. So, now there were 3 of us that he was watching with his little tail slowly wagging, and this still wasn't enough to have the cat leave. About 7 or 8 minutes later, as I was looking down on the cat from the trail above the switch and as the 3 of us were about to detour to another trail, a rabbit suddenly scurried out from under some brush about 1/2 way down the hill separating me from the cat. Now I'm not sure if it was a coincidence, but at the moment the rabbit scurried out, the cat bolted down the hill on the other side of the trail and that was the last we saw of him. I can't help but wonder if there is something wrong with the cat, given the unusual. aggressive behavior that it displayed to the other hiker a few days earlier and the strange behavior it displayed yesterday. I just read that rabies is thought to have been the cause of most of the extremely rare attacks on humans by bobcats, so maybe the cat is rabid. In any event, the cat was a lot bigger than I had imagined bobcats to be and it did make me nervous with the way it behaved. I did report this to a San Mateo County Parks ranger on the phone this morning. -- mh
